A motor vehicle crash in the predawn hours led to extensive road closure on Marshall Road, as reported by Sheriff Shannon Beasley via a social media update. The accident, which took place north of Akins Corner at Owens Road, involved a hit-and-run driver who struck a utility pole, subsequently leaving the pole and live electric lines scattered across the roadway, effectively blocking off the 1700 block.
Responding to the incident, deputies worked alongside Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) officers and crews from Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation to secure the area and initiate repairs. Traffic in the vicinity has experienced disruptions as the road closure is expected to persist until the utility pole can be replaced and the road cleared. With the utility pole's unexpected descent, the swift response underscored the inter-agency cooperation characteristic of such emergencies, despite officials not immediately releasing details about the suspect vehicle or any ongoing investigation efforts.
The accident's impact on local residents extends beyond mere inconvenience, with implications for safety and the necessity of utility restoration underlining the necessity of the extended restoration efforts. In a statement shared by Sheriff Beasley's Facebook page, the public was cautioned to avoid the area and plan alternative routes, emphasizing the road will stay closed "until electric crews can replace the pole and free up the roadway."
As the day progresses, the current focus remains on rectifying the immediate hazardous conditions the crashed utility pole presents, updates about the road reopening will undoubtedly follow once the work is complete and the roadway is safe for passage again, the Sheriff's Department urges anyone with information about the hit and run to come forward as the investigation continues into identifying those responsible for the incident.
