A 36-year-old man was rescued by neighbors and officers after his snowmobile broke through the ice on Bush Lake in Holly Township, Mich., according to reports. The incident took place yesterday when the man fell into the icy waters of the lake, surrounded by a community that was quick to respond to his distress.
The Holly Police Department received reports at approximately 2:40 p.m. and arrived on the scene to find residents already engaged in a rescue attempt. Relying on their own initiative, neighbors threw a rope to the stranded snowmobiler, enabling him to pull himself from the freezing water with the help of the community members, FOX 2 Detroit reported. As officers prepared for additional rescue efforts, the man was coached to roll towards the shore across the ice, a precaution to avoid further breaking.
Once safely ashore, the man was escorted by local law enforcement to a waiting ambulance from the Holly Fire Department. CBS News confirmed that he was subsequently taken to an area hospital for medical treatment to address potential hypothermia and other injuries related to immersion in icy waters.
Following the successful rescue of the man, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team arrived to retrieve the sunken snowmobile from the lake. "This is another reminder to be cautious when entering any frozen lake or waterway and that 'no ice is safe ice,'" the Holly Police Department warned in a statement acquired by CBS News. Officials continued stressing the importance of verifying ice thickness before venturing onto it, emphasizing that using frozen lakes always comes with inherent risks.
This rescue was notably one of three similar incidents that occurred within a span of 24 hours in Oakland County, highlighting the dangers of winter recreational activities on potentially unstable ice. Sadly, in a separate event, a dog perished after falling through the thin ice, which further underscores the potential perils of such situations.
