A 42-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday evening at Riverside Park on Houston’s south side following an attempted robbery, Click2Houston reports. Police arrived just before 9 p.m. and found the man with a gunshot wound to the torso; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the victim was meeting a female friend and was sitting with her in her car when two masked, armed men approached. The assailants tried to drive off in the vehicle, but couldn’t start it without the keys. FOX 26 Houston reports that, after failing to start the car, the men pursued the pair as they walked away.
The female friend escaped to a nearby convenience store and called 911, reporting that she heard a gunshot while fleeing. Police are still searching for the two suspects, who have not yet been identified or apprehended.
Police say the incident appears to have been a robbery gone wrong. "The possible motive was attempted robbery of the female's car," Lieutenant Willkens said in a statement to FOX 26 Houston. Residents have called for increased patrols in the area to help prevent future incidents.
Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspects’ whereabouts is urged to contact the Houston Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
