A semi-truck fire caused a significant shutdown of I-75 South in Loudon County, but the road has since been reopened. The incident occurred near the 77.6-mile marker close to Sugarlimb Road. The driver of the vehicle was not injured, according to multiple sources.
The fire started early in the morning, with the WATE news report indicating it was first reported on TDOT’s SmartWay Map at approximately 9:24 a.m. As agencies worked to control the situation and clear the scene, one lane was temporarily opened to alleviate some of the congestion, according to a social media post from the Loudon County Sheriff's Office. Travelers were advised to seek alternative routes if possible during the closure.
The robust response to the incident included the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, Loudon County Fire and Rescue, Loudon Fire Department, and Tennessee Highway Patrol, as noted by WVLT. These teams worked in tandem to manage the fire and subsequent traffic delays.
Authorities successfully reopened the interstate just after 11:20 a.m., a swift resolution considering the potential for more prolonged disruptions. "All lanes of I-75 are back open," stated the Loudon County Sheriff's Office in a social media update, although they also warned that the area was still congested and urged continued caution for motorists passing through the area. Drivers are expected to still experience delays as traffic returns to its usual flow.
As the interstate has now been cleared, travelers using I-75 South can anticipate a return to normal conditions, with emergency personnel having effectively handled the situation. No further details on the cause of the semi-truck fire were immediately available.
