After three eventful decades, the Cadillac Bar & Grill has shuttered its doors in San Francisco, bringing an end to its long-standing presence as a local dining favorite. The news was initially reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, detailing the establishment's closure after struggling to cope with the shifting dynamics of Mid-Market and the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The restaurant, which began in the 1980s near the Moscone Center and later moved to Mid-Market in 2015, was known for its "party" atmosphere and was a bustling spot for classic Mexican fare and drinks. It closed once in 1999 due to the Moscone Center's expansion, then again now at the end of 2025. Owner Michael Rodriguez expressed his sentiment through a statement posted on the restaurant's website and confirmed in an Instagram post, acknowledging the restaurant's "incredible run" and expressing gratitude to all who had supported Cadillac Bar & Grill over the years, yet the neighborhood hadn't fully bounced back from pandemic challenges, compounded by the departure of Twitter, now X Corp., from its Market Square location in 2024.
Michael Bauer, the Chronicle's food critic, once celebrated the Cadillac Bar & Grill's emblematic vibrancy and service excellence, noting that its staff created a welcoming ambiance with their keen knowledge of the menu and meticulous bar service. "The service is so caring it borders on solicitous and the waiters know the menu and what's behind the bar," Bauer had commented in his review.
Rodriguez faced the hard truth that despite attempts to reinvigorate the restaurant, external forces proved too challenging for Cadillac Bar & Grill to survive in the current climate; the Mid-Market area, which once teemed with tech-driven optimism, encountered growing commercial vacancies and lingering quality of life concerns that the restaurant could not overcome, and he decided to close the chapter at the end of 2025. He confirmed the news of the closure earlier this week on social media, marking the difficult decision after much contemplation, "After much reflection, I’ve decided that the end of 2025 was the right time to close this chapter," Rodriguez mentioned in his goodbye post.
Rodriguez's final note to patrons and the city was heartfelt: "I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported us over the decades — our loyal regulars, our guests, and all those who shared great meals and lasting memories with us," he said via the San Francisco Chronicle, acknowledging the end of an era for the storied restaurant.
