Downtown Houston’s Sam Houston Hotel, the oldest operating hotel in the central business district, has officially reopened following a careful, period-sensitive renovation of guest rooms, public areas, and the on-site restaurant. The 1924 landmark blends preserved architectural features with modern amenities designed for both business and leisure travelers, with local downtown outlets highlighting the relaunch as a newly renovated glow-up.
The relaunch follows a renovation led by Austin-based Scenic Capital Advisors and owner Rick Singleton, with the hotel now part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, according to Hotel Management. The work focused on guest rooms, the lobby, and other public spaces, incorporating design elements from the hotel’s original 1920s features.
What changed inside
Design updates include a reoriented lobby layout, restored transom windows, velvet green banquettes, and a collection of local art. The Pearl restaurant and bar now features a refreshed color palette and a redesigned bar area intended as a downtown gathering spot. Management also added a members-only billiards room with personal liquor lockers and updated event spaces to accommodate courthouse and convention-related functions.
A commercial real estate summary from Bisnow reports that renovation work began in mid-2024 and notes that the property at 1117 Prairie Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The summary highlights the project’s design partners and notes upgrades to guest rooms and back-of-house systems to support modern operations while maintaining the building’s historic character.
Why it matters for downtown visitors
Located within walking distance of the Theater District, Discovery Green, and Minute Maid Park, the Sam Houston is positioned to serve both event attendees and business travelers, a combination noted as important for downtown hotels by industry outlets. Hotel Management reports that its proximity to courthouses and entertainment venues is expected to support repeat stays. With guest rooms now open, the relaunch adds to downtown’s boutique hotel options as the city’s event calendar intensifies.
Hilton confirmed that The Pearl Restaurant & Bar continues as the on-site dining option, offering coastal Texas–inspired dishes and craft cocktails. Downtown Houston shared the reopening on X, noting the Sam Houston’s history since 1924 and highlighting the updated property.
