An investigation is currently underway following the death of an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County, Maryland. The deceased has been identified as 51-year-old Larry Horton. Horton was found unresponsive in his cell, and despite efforts by emergency medical services personnel, he was declared dead at the jail.
According to a statement from the Maryland State Police, officers discovered Horton shortly before 11:30 p.m. on January 10. Horton had been serving his sentence at the facility located in Cumberland, Maryland. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, tipped off by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID), continues to actively investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The name of the suspected inmate involved in Horton's death has not been released, pending formal charges. Forensic technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division processed the scene to assist in gathering evidence. Authorities are now awaiting autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause and manner of death.
Once the investigation concludes, the findings will be reviewed by the State’s Attorney’s Office in Allegany County. Although a suspect has been identified, Maryland State Police reiterated that their investigation remains very much active and ongoing.
