A Jacksonville man with a substantial criminal record has been handed an 11-year federal prison sentence for firearm possession and drug offenses. Malcolm Jewell Williams, a 39-year-old with 16 felony and 2 misdemeanor convictions, was sentenced following his jury trial conviction on July 25, 2025. The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe, as per a statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Williams had been barred from possessing firearms owing to his prior convictions. However, in an event on January 23, 2024, he was apprehended after attempting to sell drugs to an undercover Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detective. Williams fled the scene, leading to a foot chase that ended with his capture and the discovery of a loaded firearm, along with cocaine and drug paraphernalia. While being held in Duval County Jail, Williams managed another escape before being recaptured by law enforcement. At the times of these offenses, he was already on bond for a previous drug possession arrest in Camden County, Georgia.

The investigation was a collaborative effort among several agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The case prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys Laura Cofer Taylor and Kelli Swaney.

Williams's conviction and sentencing take place under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaborative law enforcement and community engagement.
