An officer-involved shooting occurred yesterday in Jacksonville, leaving one man dead. The incident took place at an apartment complex on Egrets Nest Drive off Gran Bay Parkway at approximately 8:30 p.m., according to a social media post by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Responding to multiple 911 calls over a domestic dispute between a married couple, officers from District 3 arrived at the scene. According to the undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief Michael Paul, after separating the man and woman to understand their respective versions of events, the confrontation escalated when the man identified as 34-year-old Daniel Rodriguez, pulled out a gun. Both officers, identified as Officer J. Rodrick and Officer J. Milam, fired at Rodriguez, who succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital.
The Sheriff's Office has stated this to be its first officer-involved shooting of the year. With the State Attorney's Office already on scene and conducting its investigation, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is poised to initiate its own investigation following the State Attorney’s completion.
