An officer-involved shooting unfolded in the Atlantic Boulevard Estates area of Jacksonville yesterday night, as confirmed by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office leadership. As per the details shared in a press conference and through an official statement, the altercation occurred on Creeks Ridge Road around 8:40 p.m.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, responding to a 9-1-1 call reporting an assault with shots fired, law enforcement officials arrived at the scene where neighbors had earlier heard a gunshot. A man was sighted in a garage with a rifle, which led to officers demanding the individual, later taken into custody without incident, to surrender the weapon. During the arrest process, the suspect’s father, identified as 68-year-old Offero Manalon, pointed the rifle at officers, eliciting gunfire from the three officers present.
The unfolding of the event precipitated a standoff lasting three hours, ending with the deployment of gas by the SWAT team and the subsequent surrender of Manalon, who was found with a gunshot wound. He received on-site medical attention before transportation to the hospital was arranged. The officers involved in the shooting have been named as Officer M. Ross, Officer Q. Kincaid, and Officer G. Hernandez.
This incident marks the second officer-involved shooting this year for a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office that continues to be scrutinized in matters of use of force. As part of the procedural follow-up, the State Attorney's Office is conducting an investigation. After its completion, "the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation," as mentioned in the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office's statement.
