South County Fire welcomed a new face to its Board of Commissioners this week. Joe Wankelman took the oath of office, joining the ranks as the latest South County Fire Commissioner. According to a social media post from the South County Fire, Wankelman was elected back in November to represent District 1, bringing with him a hefty resume that includes 17 years in military service and advanced degrees in both business and data analytics.
Having served as the executive director of the Foundation for Stable Housing, Wankelman's commitment goes beyond just public safety; it extends into ensuring that the foundational needs of a home are secure for all. South County Fire's board, tasked with setting the organization's vision and adopting policies, finds in its newest member maybe just the right blend of strategic thought and passion for service to effectively meet the needs of their community. Besides Wankelman, returning commissioners Mark Laurence and Jim Kenny also were sworn in to continue their service for Districts 3 and 5 respectively.
The regional fire authority's Board of Commissioners is a critical element in shaping the emergency response and public safety landscape. They hold the purse strings and have the final say in the hiring of the top brass, including the fire chief. Not just any group of individuals, these commissioners have to frequently decide on how to best allocate resources, a task that requires a clear vision and a detailed understanding of the community's needs.
Residents interested in the proceedings can find info on how to attend meetings or access video records of the sessions at the South County Fire website.
