In a development that heightens the legal consequences faced by a 15-year-old involved in a recent child abduction case, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office has resolved to charge the juvenile as an adult. Junior Bishop, resident of Hastings, is enmeshed in a case that gripped the community when a missing St. Johns County 11-year-old boy was discovered in a vehicle along with Bishop and 60-year-old Darnell Hairston, according to a release by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Hairston, who is a convicted sex offender, was caught during a traffic stop after a suspicion arose concerning his vehicle.

As recounted by First Coast News, the situation intensified when deputies attempted to apprehend Hairston, at which point Bishop made the decisive move to seize control of the truck and flee, sparking a high-speed chase. The pursuit resulted in Bishop colliding with a deputy's patrol car—a violent crash that led to both vehicles veering off the road. Bishop faces a slate of charges, including two first-degree felonies: aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and fleeing and eluding at reckless speeds. Each of these charges carries a minimum sentence of 30 years if a conviction is secured. "This kid was already on probation for a violent offense when he committed these new felony crimes," Sheriff Rick Staly iterated.

The investigation into the traffic stop on Dec. 31 discovered that an 11-year-old boy, who had previously been reported missing, was in the truck with Hairston and Bishop. What began as a routine traffic stop on U.S.-1 swiftly unfolded into a critical rescue and apprehension mission when deputies realized the gravity of the boy's situation. According to information obtained by Action News JAX, the young boy feared for his life and was not safe. The child was quickly shielded in the safety of a patrol vehicle while Hairston tried to escape on foot—further efforts by deputies resulted in his apprehension.

Bishop, now held at the Volusia County Branch Jail with a bond set at $133,000, may also face additional scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office has not dismissed the possibility that Bishop may have acted as a co-conspirator in the kidnapping, as per the initial news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Hairston, meanwhile, faces charges including kidnapping, battery by strangulation, aggravated child abuse, among others.
