Residents and visitors to Kaua‘i's Kekaha area are advised to brace for traffic changes through April 2026. The County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works has announced a scheduled detour due to Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation's (HDOT) roadwork on Waimea Canyon Drive. This construction effort is set to temporarily alter the flow of traffic, specifically along the route to Kōke‘e State Park, as reported on the County of Kaua‘i official website.
During weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., the detour will redirect motorists via ‘Alae Road and Kōke‘e Road in Kekaha. Those who frequently traverse this locale should anticipate the potential of being delayed and to plan their travel accordingly. In an effort to ease the navigation process, the County of Kaua‘i has assured that detour routes will be clearly marked. To further manage the change, flaggers will stand by to promptly assist with regulating the traffic.
For the safety and guidance of all, electronic message boards have already been placed, and area residents along with businesses have been issued notices regarding the upcoming detour and expected road work. As always, drivers are urged to pay close attention to and respect any traffic controls, posted signage, and heed the directions from flaggers and special duty officers while in the vicinity of the construction.
Even amid these temporary conditions, officials have underlined their commitment to maintaining access for local residents as best as possible. In a show of gratitude for the community's patience and cooperation, the County of Kaua‘i extends its thanks as HDOT strives to complete what they deem necessary repair and improvement projects on the road infrastructure.
