The Knoxville Police Department has initiated the installation of surveillance cameras to support the forthcoming Real-Time Information Center (RTIC). A report from WVLT indicates that the first camera has been placed at the crossroads of Chapman Highway and Moody Avenue. This location, along with the nine additional sites planned, has been chosen based on a meticulous review of three years of police call data and the current framework of the city's infrastructure capabilities.

As the Knoxville Police Department continues to strategically place its surveillance technology throughout the city, there is a significant emphasis on visibility. Each camera is clearly marked as KPD property with the intent to make their presence known. Yet, as noted by a statement obtained by WBIR, while the cameras are being deployed, access to the video feeds will not immediately be available to the police, as the system's backend is still under development. The project is estimated to be in full operation by the first half of 2026.

The decision to install these cameras follows the Knoxville City Council's approval back in March 2023, setting the stage for a broader surveillance network that the police hope will aid in crime investigation and management of natural disaster scenarios. Other locations for camera installations include notable intersections such as Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at Chestnut Street and Broadway at Depot Avenue, according to details from WATE.

Further showcasing the RTIC's potential utility, the KPD successfully conducted a test run in September with Drone as First Responder (DFR) technology, and they leveraged the Operations Center within the RTIC's infrastructure to ensure safety during the first Smokies game at Covenant Health Park. Notably, businesses and residents in Knoxville will soon have the option to voluntarily integrate their own security cameras with the RTIC network. Despite the delays from the originally forecasted summer of 2024 full functionality date, as told by WATE, the Knoxville Police Department asserts that this foundational effort will serve as an integral tool in forthcoming investigative and safety operations within the city.
