Las Vegas began this year with the arrival of the year’s first newborns at local hospitals. At Centennial Hills Hospital, a baby boy named JayR was born at exactly midnight, becoming the first baby of the year. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. His parents, Alejandra Sapien and Carlos Aguilera, who also have an older daughter, shared a statement with News3LV regarding his birth.
Thirteen minutes later, at Summerlin Hospital, Edelin Olejua and Michael Chavarro welcomed a son. According to 8 News Now, their baby arrived slightly earlier than expected, weighing 7.5 pounds and measuring 20 inches long. The couple, together for nine years, are in the process of choosing a name for their son, with their older daughter set to have the final say.
During their celebration, Olejua and Chavarro recounted a dramatic start to labor, as shared with News 3. Edelin explained that her water broke in the car, and by the time they arrived at the hospital, labor had progressed quickly. “I was asking for my epidural and they said, 'No, it's not time for epidural. You cannot have an epidural. The baby's here now,’” she told News3LV. The couple noted the support of hospital staff during the birth. Michael added that when he saw their son, he announced the gender immediately.
