The hustle of construction on SW 38th Street presses on as the rehabilitation project barrels into its third phase, bringing updates to the thoroughfare between West Gore Boulevard and SW Lee Boulevard, a vital corridor for local transit. With an anticipated March end date, crews have been hammering away since January 2, with City of Lawton officials noting the intensified efforts that could hasten completion.
The project, born from community outcry over road decay and safety hazards, caught the attention of the City Council, who in October 2024, elevated SW 38th Street to a priority for rehabilitation. The current phase – focusing on the north-south section, features curb and gutter replacement, pavement reconstruction, along with pipe repairs to bolster infrastructure integrity. T and G Construction, Inc., who secured the contract in April 2025, has now directed their forces on demolishing the third quadrant's west side curbs before tackling the east, as reported by the City of Lawton.
As the construction crew sails through the demolition, they simultaneously lay new foundations for curbs and gutters, essentially paving a way towards enhanced travel for Lawton's residents. Not to be overlooked, stormwater management also gets a trim, with repairs aimed at sealing pipe joints and buttressing them against future wear and tear – a clear signal of investment in the community's sustainable future.
Amid the jackhammers and debris, the promise of improved traffic flow also echoes, with the erection of a new turning lane near the railroad tracks positioned as a game changer for local drivers. These strides, as per the City of Lawton official statements, are paramount to instilling a sense of reliability, and safety on the mile-long stretch of road under the knife, split into four phases to mitigate disruptions and retain accessibility for residents and businesses alike.
For a neighborhood long acquainted with the groans and grumbles of ageing asphalt, these improvements could not come sooner. The project's finish line, steadily drawing nearer, hints at a future where smooth commutes are commonplace, and the concerns once voiced by the community are soothed by the laying of fresh concrete and the sealing of sturdy pipes, as the street itself is reborn, ready to play its part in Lawton's daily symphony of traffic.
