Lewisville residents thinking about a civic plunge have their calendar alarms set for tomorrow: candidate filing for the May general election on the City Council is poised to kick off. According to the City of Lewisville, those aiming for council seats will have from Jan. 14 to Feb. 13 to throw their hats into the ring.
Incumbents sitting firmly in their council seats, with Bob Troyer at Place 1 and Ronni Cade at Place 3, may find themselves tested as new candidates step up, fueled by visions for Lewisville's future. Every candidate must be a district resident to contend and will be decided upon by the city at large. A handy map can be found for the interested, detailing district boundaries on the city's website.
In a new turn for city elections, a route sprinkled with voter signatures is now mandatory. "Candidates must include a petition that specifies the place for which they desire to become a candidate and that petition must be signed by qualified voters of Lewisville to vote for the candidate," as laid out by the City of Lewisville. Each petition needs to pass muster with the City Secretary to ensure there's a sufficient number of legitimate signs of support.
To accommodate the gestation of local democracy, the City Secretary’s Office at Lewisville City Hall opens its arms wide from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and Friday mornings until 11:30 a.m. Ready for candidates to officially file their intent to run. Early voting is slated for a stretch starting April 20 through April 28, with the main event, election day, penciled in for May 2.
