Four individuals involved in a deadly shooting on Halloween in 2024 have been handed life sentences. Marcus Allen Chambers, James Logan Darty, Kayla Michelle McClure, and Brayden Niri Whatley were found guilty by a Walker County jury for their roles in the murder of Dakota Bottomlee, according to FOX5 Atlanta.
The investigation unfolded a tale of a planned robbery turned fatal. Deputies who arrived at the scene on October 31, 2024, discovered a chaotic scene, with evidence indicating strived to fight back against his attackers. The Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office tells that casings from different firearms and a toy gun were discovered, painting a gruesome picture of the crime.
Law enforcement's break in the case came when they were tipped off about McClure's boastful admissions concerning the crime. This led to an extensive examination of the defendants' social media activities, revealing incriminating messages and videos directly linking them to the crime. These digital trails, as laid bare by WDEF, were significant in sealing their convictions.
Further sealing their fates was the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's forensic analysis of a firearm found in Chambers' home. It was determined to have fired bullets matching casings from the murder site. However, the second firearm used in the murder was never recovered, and McClure admitted only to discharging an airsoft gun at Bottomlee's home. Yet, all four were held complicit under Georgia's "party to a crime" law – a statute which does not hesitate to fully prosecute all participants involved in the commission of a felony, as per FOX 5 Atlanta.
Sentencing for the four individuals took place on December 19, 2025, with each defendant receiving a life sentence that includes the possibility of parole. This case, the result of months of investigation by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI, closes a chapter on a violent act that has left an indelible mark on the small town of Chickamauga.
