A Lilburn man tragically lost his life after reentering his burning home on Sandra Drive to try and save the family dog, fire officials reported yesterday evening. First responders were alerted to the blaze at the two-story residence at approximately 6:23 p.m., swiftly arriving at the scene where they encountered heavy fire engulfing the garage and main living area, spreading to the attic. FOX 5 Atlanta detailed that despite efforts to save him, the man was overcome by smoke after successfully waking his mother and ensuring she was helped to safety by a neighbor.
One Lilburn officer suffered minor injuries during the incident, treated at the scene, and released, due to the heavy fire that fire crews faced upon arrival. According to 11Alive, fire officials noted that no smoke alarms were active during the time of the fire, which has left two adults displaced and in need of assistance provided by the American Red Cross.
Lilburn police officers, working in tandem with the firefighters, managed to rescue one individual from the home’s entryway before being transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Sadly, the man who reentered the house after first evacuating did not survive his actions, succumbing to the dangers of the smoke and flames while attempting to save the family pet.
On a bittersweet note, the family dog did survive the ordeal. While mourning the loss of their loved one, the family now faces the arduous task of rebuilding their lives, with the support of the American Red Cross, which has been requested to lend aid. As of the latest updates, the fire’s origin and cause remain under active investigation by a fire investigator, as mentioned by 11Alive.
