Retail giant Macy's is continuing its nationwide store closures, including the Northlake Mall store in Tucker. This move is part of a larger effort under the company's "Bold New Chapter" plan, which is set to see around 150 locations close by the end of 2026. Macy's CEO Tony Spring said, "In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations," in a memo shared with employees, as reported by WANE.
The Northlake Mall store's closing is expected to begin with clearance sales in the upcoming weeks, lasting around 10 weeks, leaving behind a property that the Tucker City Council is in the process of determining its future. Owners of the property are planning to revitalize the site into a mixed-use district, featuring 495 residential units and office space, a move partially driven by the mall's long battle with stagnating occupancy rates and loss of anchor tenants, as per a report by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Alongside Northlake Mall, Macy's is shuttering 14 locations across 12 states, as noted by WANE. The latest round of closures includes stores from California to Washington, with clearance sales anticipated to start in mid-January. The company has confirmed that it is providing impacted employees with support through transfer opportunities, severance, and other support where applicable.
Since the announcement of the "Bold New Chapter" strategy in February 2024, Macy's has been slowly decreasing its brick-and-mortar footprint, from 480 stores then to the current 424. This round of store closures is a continuation of Macy's adaptation to the ever-changing retail environment, a representative for Macy's wrote in an emailed statement shared with Nexstar. Notably, the company is not alone in this shift, with other retailers such as Kroger, Foot Locker, and Carter's also planning to close some of their locations this year.
