Motorists in Milwaukee will face closures on portions of 27th Street beginning Monday next week as part of the I-94 East-West Freeway Project, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). The project, which includes widening the highway and updating infrastructure, is expected to continue through late 2026.
The 27th Street Bridge over I-94, parts of St. Paul Avenue, and the 28th Street entrance ramp—closed since Monday—will be affected, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Detour routes include Wisconsin Avenue, 35th Street, and Greenfield Avenue, while the 35th Street or 13th Street exits will serve as alternatives for the I-94 eastbound exit to 26th Street and St. Paul Avenue.
Updates to mapping services such as Google, Apple, and Waze are expected to reflect the changes. Local leaders and residents have expressed concerns about traffic impacts. Alderman Bob Bauman told FOX 6 Now that commuters and transit users may experience longer travel times due to the simultaneous closures of multiple viaducts.
Marquette Today noted that travel to Marquette University could be affected, with additional commute time recommended. Businesses and residences along the route will remain accessible during construction. The early east leg segment of the project is scheduled for completion in 2028.
