A man has died following a shooting involving law enforcement officers in Pickaway County, Ohio, after authorities received a report of a sexual assault in progress. The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 20 and involved deputies from the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office and officers from both the Ashville and South Bloomfield Police Departments, The Columbus Dispatch revealed.
BCI spokesman Steve Irwin stated that the agencies responded to a 911 call at 2:51 p.m. on the 4800 block of Duvall Road, where they encountered a male subject. Following the encounter, shots were fired by one of the law enforcement officers, and the man was transported to a local Columbus-area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, as confirmed by ABC6.
According to NBC4i, a juvenile victim was also involved in the incident and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained before the arrival of the deputies. The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been called in to take over the investigation into the shooting, with more details yet to emerge regarding the number of officers involved in the firing or the specifics that led to the lethal outcome.
Residents of the area reported hearing multiple rounds of gunfire. "I heard at least a dozen if not a little bit more. It was back-to-back gunfire," Susan McGrath, a resident, said, according to an interview with ABC6. Another resident, Arianne Cornett, described the ordeal as "nerve-wracking," having to hear multiple shots while her children were at home.
The identities of the shooting victim and the officer or officers who discharged their firearms have not yet been disclosed, neither have the agencies provided explicit details on what precisely transpired during the deadly confrontation.
