A man has died and a woman has been hospitalized following a head-on collision on Hawaii's Big Island. The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 19 and Hikina Place in Hilo around 6:23 p.m. yesterday, as reported by KHON2.
First responders found two pickup trucks that had collided, with one man unresponsive at the scene and a 46-year-old woman from Laupāhoehoe, who was driving the second truck, transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries; this information comes amid the unfolding investigation into a crash that has put a stark light on the dangers of driving under certain impairments. Police have not released the name of the man pending notification of kin; meanwhile, they are looking into speed and alcohol as possible factors in the crash, as the driver of a Ford F150 is said to have crossed into the opposite lane, striking the Chevy Silverado driven by the female victim, as per a report by Hawaii News Now.
Efforts by emergency medical responders to save the man proved futile, with him being pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been requested to establish the exact cause of death. The man's identity remains withheld as authorities undertake the process of identification and familial notification.
The Hawaiʻi Police Department is asking the public for information about the crash. Anyone with knowledge is urged to contact Officer Joshua Rodby-Tomas by phone or email. This tragic incident marks the second traffic fatality on the Big Island in 2026, the same number as at this time last year.
