A violent incident aboard a CTA Red Line train has left a 34-year-old man in serious condition after a stabbing early Sunday morning. According to NBC Chicago, the altercation that led to the stabbing occurred near the 69th Street stop at approximately 2:51 a.m. The victim was involved in a verbal dispute with another man when the situation escalated, with the suspect pulling out a sharp object and stabbing the victim in the chest before making his escape from the train.
As the train was at the 69th Street stop during the dispute, it's unclear how many witnesses were present. However, after being stabbed, the man was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where his condition was reported as serious by Chicago police. Currently, there are no suspects in custody, while the authorities continue to investigate this act of violence that disrupted the early morning commute.
The incident on the Red Line is not an isolated one. CBS News Chicago reports that just last week, there was another nearby episode of violence where a man and a woman were stabbed on the platform for the same 69th Street Red Line stop. These consecutive events highlight concerns over safety on the city's public transportation system.
The victim from Sunday's attack was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, as per the police statement. No one was in custody in the aftermath of the incident on Sunday morning, and the search for the attacker continues. Chicago Transit Authority officials and local authorities are likely to face increased pressure to address these security issues, to ensure the safety of their commuters who, early in the morning, encountered such a brutal altercation.
