A Hays County jury has sentenced Izaiah Vela, a 29-year-old Martindale man, to 75 years in prison for the sexual assault of a child and his role in dealing fentanyl that led to the death of a 15-year-old high school student. The sentencing, detailed in a report by FOX 7 Austin, came after Vela's conviction on January 15, 2025.
Vela's criminal actions included sexually assaulting an underage girl he met through Instagram. As per the Hays County District Attorney's Office, he convinced his victim to meet him by offering her free marijuana. In a follow-up from the same incident reported by FOX 7 Austin, the evidence presented during the trial indicated that Vela then "did what he wanted" to the victim while brandishing a firearm to enforce his intent.
Further digging into Vela's past unearthed a litany of criminal behavior, including multiple convictions for burglary of a motor vehicle and prison sentences for evading arrest with a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The FOX 7 Austin reveals that alongside the assault, Vela dealt marijuana and fentanyl pills, substantially to high schoolers in the community. One tragic outcome of this illegal trade was the overdose of a 15-year-old student in October 2023 after purchasing pills from Vela.
Following the overdose, investigators were able to connect Vela to the death and other fentanyl sales through his activity on Instagram. "The defendant preyed on vulnerable minors in Hays County in the worst ways possible," Assistant Criminal District Attorney Daniel Sakaida told CBS Austin.
