The Maui Beach Ballroom in Kahului was shut down by the Hawai‘i Department of Health on Wednesday after a routine inspection on Tuesday revealed a severe cockroach infestation, including roaches on kitchen surfaces and egg cases. The venue, managed by D.H. Investment Inc., must address the violations before reopening, according to the Hawaii State Department of Health.
The ballroom is required to hire a professional pest control company, seal all cracks and crevices, and perform a thorough cleaning to remove grease and debris. A follow-up inspection was scheduled on Thursday to ensure the issues have been corrected, as reported by the Hawaii State Department of Health.
Maui’s Department of Health Food Safety Branch checks and regulates food businesses to prevent health risks like foodborne illnesses and contamination. Cockroach infestations and unsanitary conditions can spread disease. The Hawaii State Department of Health provides resources, including a placarding system and online inspection reports, so people can see how restaurants follow health rules.
