Maui County firefighters responded to 22 fire-related calls from New Year’s Eve into the early hours of New Year’s Day, according to the county fire department. Most of the incidents involved small brush, dumpster, and rubbish fires, and no major structural damage or displaced residents were reported. The department said additional engines and personnel were on duty for the holiday, allowing crews to quickly control the fires.

According to KHON2, the department’s log recorded five brush fires, six dumpster fires, three small vegetation fires, two vehicle fires and three unauthorized burns across the island. The log also listed three residential property fires that were extinguished before crews arrived, along with three minor structure fires in Napili, Maui Lani and Hana that caused minimal damage. The department said additional personnel and equipment staged for the holiday helped keep the incidents contained and brief.

Most blazes were minor and quickly contained

Maui Now reported that most of the fires were in the incipient stage, measuring about 10 by 10 feet or smaller, and could be handled by a single engine company. County officials said one fireworks-related eye injury required transport to a hospital, and no increase in serious medical calls was reported. Crews returned to routine operations by the morning, according to the outlet.

Why officials warn against aerial fireworks

County regulations restrict which consumer fireworks are permitted, and aerial-style devices are illegal without a licensed display permit, officials said. Authorities noted that even small fireworks can ignite rubbish or brush fires if they land in dry vegetation or debris. The fire department urged residents to use only permitted items, keep a water source nearby, and dispose of spent fireworks properly.

How to report problems

Maui Fire Prevention officials told KHON2 that questions about permits can be submitted through the county’s MAPPS portal, and that 911 should be called for active fires. Residents are also encouraged to report suspected illegal aerial fireworks to law enforcement so authorities can investigate and help prevent larger incidents.
