New Orleans is set to become a brighter city, thanks to the "Lights On" initiative led by Mayor Helena Moreno. The program aims to enhance public safety and quality of life by improving street lighting across the city, beginning with a pilot project in New Orleans East. Mayor Moreno, alongside key city officials such as District Attorney Jason Williams and Councilmember Jason Hughes, will mark the initiative's launch near the Willows area this Tuesday, according to the City of New Orleans.
The lighting repair efforts in New Orleans East are scheduled for January 13, at 10 a.m., focusing on a stretch of approximately five to 10 blocks along Crowder Boulevard and the I-10 Service Road. Moreno's team, which also includes Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Chief Michael Harrison and Deputy Mayor of Infrastructure Stephen Nelson, will outline the strategic plans behind "Lights On." The event coincides with the mayor's first 100 days in office, highlighting her commitment to immediate and tangible improvements within the city's infrastructure, despite ongoing budget challenges, as detailed by the City of New Orleans.
As reported by the City of New Orleans, the initiative underscores an effort to address a fundamental service that bolsters both resident welfare and crime prevention. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick is expected to be present at the event, reinforcing the link between effective public lighting and reduced criminal activity. City officials will discuss, their strategies for prioritizing repair work, which hinges on a data-driven approach ensuring high-traffic and high-need areas are addressed first.
The "Lights On" initiative is a testament to Mayor Moreno's collaborative approach with both the City Council and public safety leaders in New Orleans, a strategy intended to gather momentum for her tenure as mayor.
