On Wednesday, the sound of progress rang as shovels hit the earth at the former Memphis International Raceway. A groundbreaking ceremony was held to showcase new plans for revamping the site into a modern racing and entertainment hub. The project, estimated at $60 million, is spearheaded by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) with the site's recent purchase by IHRA Owner Darryl Cuttel in December after the raceway's closure in 2022. According to a report from FOX13 Memphis, the ambitious plan includes demolishing old structures and adding a concert venue, a new dirt track, and upgrades to the circle track and drag strip.
Amid expectations are discussions to potentially launch a racetrack by this fall. It seems IHRA aspires to quickly usher in a series of enhancements, a move likely to please motorsport enthusiasts and economic forecasters alike. The revitalization is poised not only to bring back drag racing and stock car competitions but also to introduce large-scale events to the community. "You know, I think that we will host large national and international events here. And I think we’ll see that in three years. We’re bringing a national nitro series here for this year," IHRA President Leah Martin told WREG News in a statement.
The IHRA has articulated a vision of transforming Memphis International Raceway into a multi-use facility that extends beyond racing. It includes plans for an amphitheater for concerts, which underscores an intent to embrace a wider cultural significance. Local and state officials, along with community partners, who were present at the ceremony, underscored their belief in the broader economic and cultural impacts of the project as reported by Action News 5.
In light of these developments, a tentative IHRA schedule has hinted at a race finale occurring at the revamped venue in November. This would require significant refurbishments to be completed on a tight timeline. The stakes are high as the IHRA hopes to breathe new life into the former raceway, transforming it into a national and eventually international destination.
