As Memphis braces for a potential severe winter weather event, the city is working on all cylinders to safeguard essential services, public safety, and resident welfare. Details obtained by the City of Memphis indicate a comprehensive winter weather readiness plan has been activated, with city departments coordinating their efforts in anticipation of the icy conditions ahead.
According to an announcement by the City of Memphis, their Public Works crews are in motion, laying down a brine solution on some 330 miles of key routes, starting Wednesday, January 21. By the close of Friday, they aim to have splashed about 25,000 gallons of this slick-battling brine across the city's streets to help prevent the freeze from taking hold.
In a move to warm those caught in the cold's embrace, the City is collaborating with the Hospitality Hub and has set up First Baptist Church at 200 East Parkway North as a warming center. The City says transit to this haven from the cold is possible by calling 901-486-0939 during operational hours. Should Mother Nature rattle her sabers louder, additional community centers are on standby to open their doors as necessity dictates.
Despite the weather's bluster, Memphis Public Libraries and Memphis Parks are also standing their ground, projecting full service. However, the City cautions that some adjustments to hours and locations may be needed in response to how the weather plays out. Certain facilities are ready to pivot, transforming into inclement weather havens should the need arise. For the latest adjustments in service, residents can glance at updates on the City of Memphis website and their social media feeds.
Maintaining its operational heartbeat, the City of Memphis emphasizes the continuity of essential services even as winter's chill bears down. Changeable conditions are the rhythm of the days ahead, and updates will be broadcast in tune with these — available both at MemphisTn.gov and the City's social media channels. Additionally, a news conference is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2025, at the Office of Emergency Management, where updates will be streamed for all those watching at home.
