An overnight fire ripped through an eight-unit apartment building in Mesa early Saturday, leaving two adults and four children with serious burn injuries after a third-alarm response along S. Pennington near Dobson and Baseline roads shortly before 2 a.m., officials said. One child was airlifted to a specialized burn center, while the other victims were rushed to area burn units.
According to ABC15, Mesa Fire officials say the blaze started around 1:54 a.m. Crews arrived to find two adults and four children already suffering from serious burns. All six were transported to local burn centers, and one child was first treated at Banner Desert Medical Center before being flown to a specialized facility.
Arizona's Family reports the fire tore through an eight-unit complex on S. Pennington and that the youngest injured child is only six months old, according to Mesa Fire. The incident was quickly upgraded to a third alarm, bringing in firefighters from Chandler and Tempe to support Mesa crews. Roughly 30 residents were evacuated and taken to a nearby school for shelter and medical evaluation.
Third-Alarm Response And Ongoing Probe
The third-alarm designation pulled in extra engines, ladder trucks and support teams as firefighters worked to knock down the flames and root out hotspots in the building. The cause of the fire has not yet been released, and investigators remain on scene, ABC15 reports.
