While the rest of us were ringing in the New Year with festivities and resolutions, the City of Mesquite's Police and Fire Departments were ensuring safety was the top priority. On the eve of a new beginning, officers and firefighters were deployed in specialized teams focusing on the prevention of illegal fireworks, irresponsible gunfire, and keeping drunk drivers off the road. As per the City of Mesquite, the measures taken by these teams led to the confiscation of over 46 pounds of fireworks and the seizure of two firearms, with two individuals arrested for discharging a firearm.

The law enforcement's diligence appeared to pay off as they made 6 DWI arrests, yet reported no accidents as a result of these offenses. It's a testament to the effectiveness of their proactive steps, even though there's still room for improvement. Meanwhile, Mesquite's Fire Department dealt with its own set of challenges, responding to two major structure fires, which, thankfully, seemed unconnected to the night's revelries or fireworks.

To offer up some perspective, City Manager Cliff Keheley weighed in on the evening's outcomes, pointing towards the decline in holiday-related incidents. "These numbers are an improvement over last year’s statistics. There is still work to be done but we make progress every year by educating residents on how to celebrate safely," Keheley said, per the City of Mesquite. This sentiment acknowledges both the achievements and the ongoing challenges faced by the city in curtailing hazardous holiday actions.
