Tomorrow, Miami-Dade County officials, along with city representatives and community leaders, will convene in Overtown to mark a pivotal moment in local housing development: the grand opening of the 16 Corner affordable housing community. The ceremonial ribbon-cutting is set to take place at 1560 N.W. 1 Court, officially unveiling the revitalized housing units in a neighborhood deeply rooted in multi-generational residency, as per the county's official announcement.
16 Corner's journey from being tagged an unsafe structure in 2018 to this moment of celebration is a testament to the collaborative endeavor of entities such as Omni Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), The Vagabond Group, and Mt. Zion Community Development Corporation (CDC). With the Miami-Dade County Housing and Community Development's (HCD) input and support, the project took shape while ensuring that residents faced no displacement even as their homes were being transformed. Having kept everyone in place during renovations stands as a firm statement of the project's commitment to the community.
A total investment of nearly $1.4 million, comprising $812,000 in Documentary Stamp Surtax funds and $585,562.47 from the Development Inflation Adjustment Fund (DIAF), breathed new life into five buildings, translating into 44 rehabilitated units. These funds, as detailed on the Miami-Dade County official release, provided a financial cushion for developers committed to retaining affordable housing options in Miami's evolving urban landscape. Upon completion this month, the project will include eight additional units, further fortifying the fabric of the Overtown community.
The ethos of the redevelopment focused on preserving affordability for residents by setting rents at levels accommodating households at 50 percent Average Median Income (AMI). This emphasis on long-term affordability and neighborhood stability is crucial in a region where the housing market can be relentless for families scraping by. Joining forces to celebrate the achievement, Miami-Dade County District 3 Commissioner Keon Hardemon, City of Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins, City of Miami Commission Chairwoman and District 5 Commissioner Christine King, and City of Miami District 2 Commissioner Damian Pardo will be present among other dignitaries and officials.
The 16 Corner Grand Opening event will commence at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, inviting attendees to witness the fruits of a community's relentless pursuit for decent, affordable housing. A range of Miami's civic leaders, including Miami-Dade County Chief Operating Officer Jimmy Morales and Miami-Dade County Housing and Community Development Director Nathan Kogon, AICP, are among the expected guests heralding this significant stride in tackling the affordable housing challenge head-on.
