A tragic scene unfolded in Miami Gardens as a 33-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting during a response to what was initially reported as a crisis situation, authorities confirmed.
Following up on a call made, Miami Gardens Police arrived at a residence on the 3400 block of Northwest 182nd Street around yesterday afternoon. Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt stated during a press conference that officers were compelled to use lethal force when they encountered the armed man who appeared to be a threat to another person. Local10 reported that firearms were recovered at the location.
Details on the events leading up to the shooting remain sparse. However, neighbors recounted hearing a startling number of gunshots. "Like 10 shots, and then maybe one minute later, 30 cop cars came by — every kind of cop car," Bryan Delpozo, a neighbor, told NBC6 Miami. Another neighbor admitted to being frightened by the sounds of gunfire, indicating the sense of alarm that permeated the community.
The aftermath of the shooting saw law enforcement swarming the area while a Chopper6 video captured a yellow tarp covering a body at the scene, fueling tensions and sorrow. The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard department protocol. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has undertaken the investigation into a shooting, as authorities seek to piece together the circumstances that led to the man's death. The identity of the deceased has yet to be publicly released although relatives have reportedly been in touch with the media, sharing their distress off camera.
