Overnight, a chunk of Morena Boulevard in San Diego’s Morena neighborhood quite literally dropped out of the morning commute. A large sinkhole opened near Napa Street, buckling the asphalt, sending water and debris across the road, and forcing emergency crews to shut down multiple lanes. City workers and police cordoned off the area while engineers checked how badly the pavement and the pipe beneath it were damaged.
According to 10News, a San Diego Police official said the sinkhole formed at about midnight after a water main broke at Morena Boulevard and Napa Street. By around 7:30 a.m., all southbound lanes on Morena between Buenos Avenue and Linda Vista Road were closed, and only one northbound lane was open. The San Diego Police Department told 10News a Sig Alert would likely stay in place for roughly 24 to 48 hours.
Crews Worked To Stop The Leak And Stabilize The Street
City crews moved in quickly to isolate the break, shut off the water flow, and shore up the damaged stretch of roadway while traffic control guarded the work zone. That portion of Morena Boulevard is already a construction hot spot thanks to the City of San Diego’s Pure Water program, which includes the Morena Pump Station and an offsite conveyance pipeline project running through the same corridor. Per the City of San Diego, ongoing utility relocation and pipeline construction there have meant repeated lane shifts and repairs.
Not The First Break Along This Corridor
The Morena and Linda Vista corridor has been through this kind of mess before. As reported by NBC 7 San Diego, a 16-inch cast-iron water main ruptured in May 2024 at a nearby spot, flooding businesses and leading to extended repair work, a reminder that the infrastructure in this area is under strain.
Traffic Impacts And What Drivers Should Expect
Drivers should plan on delays and obey the posted detours while crews repair the main and rebuild the damaged section of pavement. Officials have not committed to a firm time for a full reopening, but 10News reported the police estimate that the Sig Alert will last about 24 to 48 hours. Motorists are urged to check city traffic updates and allow extra travel time until the road is cleared.
