The National Weather Service has delivered yet another bulletin that'll have Minneapolis residents bundling up and bracing for a cocktail of snow showers and plummeting temperatures. Today, you'll find yourself in the midst of snow showers mainly before 2 p.m., with the mercury sliding down to a chilly 13 degrees by 5 p.m.; sharp gusts as high as 35 mph are set to cause more than a few wintry winces.
Tonight continues the trend with scattered snow showers lingering around until the early hours — hold onto your hats, because those winds aren't giving us a break hitting 15 mph, and gusts could reach 30 mph, bringing in a potential for yet another layer of snow to grace our cityscape, as the advisory maintains there's a 50 percent chance for it the city is already set upon by the relentless chill of winter, looking ahead won't offer much relief, with biting winds chills anticipated to plummet even further, down to -13 degrees come Saturday night.
As the weekend unfolds, snow showers seem to hold a tentative grasp over the city with a 60 percent likelihood on Sunday before noon, and although Monday, which is M.L.King Day, promises to be partly sunny, the cold is not going anywhere with the high teasing us at a meager 4 degrees, according to the forecast. But it's not just the snow that's wearing out its welcome—our wind chills are on a steep dive, projected to hit between -20 to -25 degrees early next week, an unmistakable signal to layer up and hunker down.
Spotter activation for SKYWARN is deemed unnecessary; however, the inconvenient concoction of gusty winds and snow has put a Winter Weather Advisory in place through 6 p.m. today, warning travelers to remain cautious as open areas will be particularly treacherous in western and southern Minnesota, the situation is nothing to scoff at with the visibility likely to drop off sharply and travel becoming difficult, oversight for which could easily become fodder for regrets.
