Following a federal shooting in Minneapolis, city officials and law enforcement have called for calm and peaceful demonstrations. The incident sparked protests, leading to 30 people being detained and subsequently released after they blocked roads and damaged property during a downtown march. According to updates provided by the City of Minneapolis, the protests left the Depot Renaissance Hotel with an estimated $6,000 in damages, an incident involving a vehicle that caused no damage, and minor injuries to one officer.
Mayor Jacob Frey has expressed pride in the community's response to the unrest, "I’m inspired by the countless community members who have showed up to provide food, advocate for justice and keep the peace." However, he warned against property destruction and unsafe behavior. "But if anyone causes property damage or puts others in danger, they will be arrested. We are standing up to Donald Trump’s chaos not with our own brand of chaos, but with care and unity," Frey said, in a statement obtained by the City of Minneapolis.
The protests saw hundreds of people gathering in downtown areas near prominent hotels. Incidents ranged from throwing objects like snow, ice, and rocks at officers and vehicles to a group forcing entry into the Canopy Hotel. The police responded throughout the evening, issuing dispersal orders and declaring unlawful assembly. The night concluded with the assistance of around 200 officers from the MPD, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
In light of the recent protests, Minneapolis officials have reiterated guidelines for peaceful protesting. Individuals have the right to assemble in public spaces and on sidewalks, carrying signs and chanting. However, the city draws a line at behaviors such as object throwing, starting fires, damaging property, and the use of fireworks or weapons. The City of Minneapolis has clarified that while MPD does not enforce federal civil immigration laws, officers may get involved if safety concerns arise to maintain public safety. Thus, ensuring that the community understands the role of police in these circumstances.
