Following a fatal shooting in the Whittier neighborhood of South Minneapolis that resulted in the death of Alex Pretti by federal agents, community tensions have escalated as Minneapolis Council Member Aisha condemned the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The shooting is reported to have occurred around 9 a.m. at the intersection of 26th and Nicollet, marking the second such incident within three weeks involving ICE. In a statement released by the City of Minneapolis, Council Member Aisha called for the immediate departure of ICE from the state, describing the presence of federal agents as an occupation that has resulted in death and community strife.
The confrontation between ICE and community members intensified as federal agents deployed chemical irritants in response to protesters and observers gathered at the scene following the incident. According to the council member Aisha's account, several individuals who showed up to protest were detained. According to the City of Minneapolis, Aisha stated, "Whittier is the most organized neighborhood in the most organized city in the country. We are strong." She criticized the federal agents for what she considers as instigating violence and escalation in the neighborhood. In addition to calling for the removal of ICE from Minneapolis, Aisha urged Governor Walz to arrest individuals responsible for the shootings, enact an eviction moratorium for as long as the state is considered occupied, and realign the focus towards protection of communities over the deployment of force against civilians.
Aisha's address to the community underscored her solidarity and pledged her support, both in the streets and through her official capacity to repel ICE's presence. Furthermore, she indicated that she is calling upon local police to protect residents and to eschew compliance with ICE’s demands. The Council Member's statement emphasized the validity of the community’s anger and resistance, pledging to be present with the residents in their opposition. "This invasion of our city by federal agents cannot be sustained. The people of Minneapolis are hurting, tired, and extremely angry — all these emotions are justified. Resistance to this ICE occupation is justified," Aisha asserted, according to the City of Minneapolis announcement.
The incident has sparked a fierce debate around federal immigration enforcement's role in local communities and the use of lethal force. As demonstrations continue, the situation in Minneapolis remains a focal point for discussions on federal agency overreach and the impact such interventions have on local residents. The council member's demands for action reflect a broader concern amongst local leaders and community members about the way federal immigration enforcement is conducted and its consequences for neighborhood safety and cohesion.
