Minneapolis has long been a sanctuary city—a place where undocumented immigrants can reside with less fear. The resolve of this city stands to be tested as Jason Chavez, Minneapolis Ward 9 council member, takes a stand against immigration enforcement funding. According to a recent social media post, Chavez declared, "Let me be clear, voting to fund immigration enforcement is green-lighting the separation of families and racial discrimination."
Chavez intends to bring a policy resolution before the council in February. Swearing a commitment to the immigrant community, the resolution's mission is to oppose the funding that fuels the machinery responsible for tearing apart immigrant families. "I’ll be introducing a policy resolution with my colleagues opposing any funding for immigration enforcement and calling on Congress to repeal the Laken Riley Act," Chavez said, as per Minneapolis Ward 9.
While this local action targets federal laws, the impact of such a resolution would resonate with symbolic significance. Encouraging residents to reach out to their congressional representatives, Chavez seeks to make this a collective movement. The message is clear: you can't condemn the harsh treatment faced by immigrant communities while simultaneously funding the very methods that enable such treatment. "Please contact your members of congress and ask them to hold strong in supporting our immigrant neighbors," as stated by Jason Chavez - Minneapolis Ward 9.
