Residents of Minneapolis Ward 9 are on high alert following announcements that more federal agents are expected to be deployed in Minnesota for immigration enforcement actions. Jason Chavez, representing Minneapolis Ward 9 on social media, sounded the alarm to his constituents in a recent Facebook post. In his message, Chavez reported that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has committed to sending hundreds more federal agents into the state today and tomorrow, targeting immigrant communities under the guise of addressing "fraud."
Given the gravity put on by the expected increase in immigration enforcement, Chavez urged locals to make arrangements for safety and to know their rights. According to Chavez, "they are specifically targeting our immigrant community," while claiming to focus on "fraud." Residents with the misfortune to be in the area during these times, particularly Latino members of the community, have noted enforcement activity as they commute to work and engage in daily routines like filling their cars with gas and dropping children off at schools or daycare facilities.
Noem's pledge for heightened enforcement has sparked a range of reactions among community members and activists who see the rhetoric of fraud as a thin veil for discriminatory practices. Echoing the community's concerns, Chavez called to his constituents’ attention the particularly harsh targeting of Latino neighbors, providing insight into the alleged profiling. In his statement, Chavez said, "We know this is a racist lie."
Jason Chavez's call to action also came with a plea for solidarity and mutual assistance in the community. He encouraged locals to support each other, especially the more vulnerable ones, by helping them plan ahead and access safe transportation if needed. "I beg you to please take precaution and work with any vulnerable neighbor who may need help with planning," Chavez implored, showcasing his concern for the well-being of his constituents. The response from the community is expected to reflect Chavez's emphasis on preparedness and standing together against what some perceive as an intrusive enforcement surge.
