House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer announced congressional hearings into a $9 billion fraud scheme in Minnesota. The misappropriated federal funds, intended for vulnerable residents, are alleged to have been spent on luxury items and possibly funneled to terrorist networks.

During the hearing, Chairman Comer stated that members of Minnesota's Somali community are implicated in the alleged fraud. According to the House Oversight Committee, He criticized state officials, including Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison, for failing to act despite multiple warnings, saying, "The most vulnerable are suffering as a result."

State Representatives attending the hearing said they have long tried to address fraud in Minnesota’s social services. Comer recognized their efforts, signaling bipartisan concern. The hearing noted that about 35 percent of Minnesota’s state budget comes from federal grants, meaning fraud affects federal taxpayers.

Comer highlighted the impact of the alleged fraud on vulnerable groups, including children and families. He called the scandal breathtaking and suggested it may be just the tip of the iceberg amid ongoing federal investigations. Comer also criticized the Walz Administration for ignoring warning signs and retaliating against whistleblowers.

Federal authorities are taking action. The U.S. Department of Justice has charged 98 defendants in Minnesota fraud cases, securing 64 convictions so far, Comer said. Homeland Security and Health and Human Services are investigating fraud and tightening controls on aid distribution to protect taxpayer money. Comer called for jail time for the perpetrators and accountability for officials who failed to act.
