Amidst concerns over civil liberties, Minnesota Senate President Bobby Joe Champion has called for a federal investigation following an ICE raid in Minneapolis. The incident, which occurred in the Camden neighborhood, saw agents forcefully entering a residence without a clear demonstration of a judicial warrant. Senator Champion criticized the actions, highlighting the need for accountability and adherence to constitutional safeguards.
In response to what he sees as recurrent breaches of due process, Senator Champion stated, "The federal government needs to answer for the apparent violations of due process and protections from unreasonable searches and seizures for which every person present in the United States is entitled." Pointing to a pattern of rights violations by ICE agents, he underlined that the government must address these issues without delay.
With a focus on safeguarding Minnesotan rights, Senator Champion urged state officials to initiate their own review. He stressed that the state must step in to ensure constitutional rights aren't trampled. According to a statement obtained by SFist, Champion further informed residents, "If ICE knocks on your door you do not have to let them in and ask to see a judicial warrant." This serves as an attempt to empower citizens with knowledge of their rights amid escalating immigration enforcement tactics.
Champion's demand comes as part of a broader dialogue on the role of federal agencies within local jurisdictions. Advocates for civil rights and immigrant communities have long criticized ICE's modus operandi, arguing that these operations often instill fear and disrupt the lives of not just non-citizens but citizens alike. Senator Champion's call for federal and state-level investigations reflects a growing demand for oversight of immigration enforcement practices and a recommitment to the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.
