Mayor Rebecca Schack made a point to address the ripple effects felt in Minnetonka after recent federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities increased across Minnesota. Following the death of Renée Nicole Good during a confrontation with an ICE agent, Schack spoke out. According to an official statement on the City of Minnetonka's website, the incident in Minneapolis has sparked cries for transparency and accountability that echo throughout Minnetonka and beyond.
In her role as both mayor and a licensed attorney, Schack has firmly committed to upholding the Constitution. Her public response underscores a dedication to maintaining civil liberties, including due process and the right to assemble peacefully. Schack was quoted as saying, "We will continue to uphold the fundamental rights guaranteed to every person within our jurisdiction," as stated by the City of Minnetonka. She also stressed the importance of local law enforcement in ensuring community safety and the facilitation of lawful protests.
As national debates flare around immigration enforcement and the use of force by federal authorities, Schack emphasized the necessity for those authorities to respect individual rights and the rule of law in their operations. She vowed to maintain communication with federal representatives to safeguard due process and civil liberties for everyone involved.
Amid heightened tensions, Schack's message was also a plea for civility. She urged the community to keep calm and show respect and compassion towards each other, regardless of differing policy views. "We can disagree on policy and enforcement, but we must never abandon our commitment to constitutional principles and human dignity," Schack said, as per the City of Minnetonka.
