Residents of Monroe were awakened to the sound of gunshots shortly after midnight on Monday. According to a post on the Monroe Police Department's Facebook page, officers responded to a report of a shooting at 401 S. West Street. It seems a typical start to an otherwise uneventful week has been marred by violence.
Upon their arrival, police found an 18-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound to his hand. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment and fortunately, has been released. The police shared that the shooting resulted from an altercation involving the victim and another individual arguing over a firearm, which subsequently discharged. At this point, no charges have been filed as the case remains under an active investigation.
The authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. They believe bystanders or individuals with knowledge of the incident could provide valuable information to aid in piecing together the events that escalated into a gunfire.
