A routine this morning turned tragic near San Rafael when a San Rafael woman was struck and killed while crossing Point San Pedro Road, authorities said. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene, and one lane of the busy corridor stayed closed for much of the day as investigators combed through evidence.
According to SFGATE, the California Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred shortly before 8:40 AM at the intersection of Point San Pedro Road and Summit Avenue. CHP Officer Arthur Tellez told the outlet the pedestrian, identified only as a female, was hit in or near a crosswalk. The driver, a man, was not arrested. The CHP said her name is being withheld until her family can be notified.
Intersection Was Slated For A Pedestrian Beacon
Long before today’s deadly crash, the crossing at Point San Pedro and Summit was already on Marin County’s radar as a trouble spot. The intersection was included in a Highway Safety Improvement Program plan that called for installing a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, also known as a HAWK, at that location.
The project’s Notice of Exemption, as documented on the state’s CEQAnet system, outlines the planned HAWK signal and related crossing upgrades at the same intersection where the woman was struck (CEQAnet).
Roadwork And Safety Context
Point San Pedro Road has already been the focus of a series of fixes and traffic-management efforts in recent years, including a retaining-wall repair that brought lane closures and sidewalk work to the corridor.
Marin County Public Works has previously detailed that retaining-wall project and the associated lane closures along Point San Pedro Road between Marina Boulevard and Summit Avenue, highlighting the ongoing effort to shore up the busy stretch (Marin County Public Works).
Investigation Ongoing
CHP officers are still sorting out exactly what led to the deadly collision. A lane of Point San Pedro Road remained closed into the afternoon as investigators documented the scene and collected evidence, according to SFGATE. Officials have not said whether speed, impairment or any other factors played a role, and the agency has not indicated whether charges might follow.
The community is left reeling from the sudden loss. Authorities said the victim’s identity will be released once relatives have been notified. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is urged to contact law enforcement as the investigation continues.
