In what might read as an unusual tale of urban wildlife intervention, Mountain View Police Department officers played the role of first responders and saviors to a distressed sea lion pup last Monday. Found in the area of Garcia Avenue, far from its natural beachfront habitat, the sea lion, christened "Babymac," was spotted in peril amid the flow of human traffic. According to the Mountain View Police Department's Facebook post, Officer McPherson was pivotal, safely navigating the pup out of the bustling area and into her patrol vehicle, subsequently ensuring Babymac's safe passage to The Marine Mammal Center.
Once at the center's facilities, the star of this impromptu rescue began to receive the necessary care. The Marine Mammal Center's Facebook post revealed that the pup was in a dire state upon arrival, suffering from severe malnutrition and much too young to be without his mother. Thanks to the swift action to seize and provide care for Babymac, the sea lion is now reportedly out of the intensive care quarantine and showing signs of improvement.
The Mountain View Police Department's encounter with Babymac underscores the varying challenges law enforcement face, which can often go beyond typical crime-fighting duties. As the Mountain View Police Department's social media post highlighted, the officers are ever ready to "serve in whatever capacity the job requires," be it responding to emergencies, aiding community members, or even protecting wildlife.
