Mountain View's local grocery store, Nob Hill Foods, is set to close its doors for good come late May, further narrowing the options for nearby shoppers in need of a convenient stop for their pantry staples. According to San Jose Spotlight, the decision was made by The Raley's Companies, which has owned the upscale chain since 1998, because the lease renewal period aligned with a strategic move shaped by economic factors, and they are now choosing not to extend the lease at the Grant Park Plaza location.
The store's closure, which is situated in the Cuesta Park neighborhood, came as a surprise to many of its long-standing customers who appreciated the store for its friendly staff and high-quality offerings, "It sucks big time," George Harris, a regular shopper at Nob Hill Foods told San Jose Spotlight, reflecting a shared sentiment among those who now have to turn to alternative grocery options in the vicinity such as 99 Ranch Market, Smart & Final, Nijiya Market, or travel a bit further to Safeway.
Despite last year's discussions within the city about rezoning the site for multifamily housing, no action was taken, as property owners at the time showed no interest in redevelopment. This leaves the fate of the soon-to-be-vacant space uncertain. The company has confirmed that it's focused on supporting employees during the transition by working to place as many as possible at other Raley's locations scattered throughout the region, including Redwood City, Santa Clara, Campbell, Morgan Hill, and San Jose.
While the community braces for the store's final days, set to be before the lease concludes in May, as noted by a KRON4 report, the specifics of the closing date remain unspecified. Representatives have assured the public that the current workforce, comprised of around 50 individuals, is receiving offers to continue their employment at neighboring Raley's outlets, a small consolation for the employees faced with an abrupt transition.
