An early morning collision on Monday in Whitehaven ensnared a Memphis Police Department (MPD) officer and another driver, resulting in a two-vehicle crash at a busy intersection. According to WREG, the crash occurred at around 8:30 a.m. at the crossroads of Elvis Presley and Winchester Road. Images from the scene depicted a toppled pickup truck and a damaged police cruiser.
Both drivers, the officer and the civilian, sustained injuries that were deemed non-critical and received treatment at a local hospital, per MPD. The department is actively probing the incident, and the investigation is ongoing. Nearby residents and commuters experienced the aftermath, as seen by FOX13 crews who arrived to witness cleanup efforts still underway by 9:30 a.m. The crash involved an overturned truck and a sedan showing significant front-end damage, FOX13 reported.
Surveillance footage reviewed by ABC24 showed the moments leading up to the collision, revealing that the MPD officer, who was traveling east on Winchester Road in an unmarked Chevy Malibu, ran a red light before striking a Toyota Tacoma proceeding north on Elvis Presley Boulevard.
The officer, not in emergency mode at the time of the accident, suffered minor injuries and was not recording the incident on an in-car video system, according to the police report cited by ABC24. Local driver Terrance Jones explained to ABC24 that the intersection is known for frequent accidents, exacerbated by construction and heavy traffic. "It’s pretty chaotic, especially with the construction," Jones said. "It’s been a couple of accidents more recently at the construction sites." No charges have been filed as MPD continues its scrutiny into what transpired on that fateful Monday morning.
