Early Friday morning, commuters on I-290 faced significant delays following a multi-vehicle collision that caused a truck to overturn and snarled traffic. According to FOX 32 Chicago, the incident occurred around 5:11 a.m. on westbound I-290 near 25th Avenue in Bellwood, prompting Illinois State Police to shut down all lanes shortly following the crash. One lane was reopened an hour later, at approximately 6:11 a.m., providing some relief to the congested roadway.
In the wake of the crash, injuries were reported, with victims being transported to local hospitals, the exact number and severity of which were not initially clear. While traffic was redirected off the expressway at 25th Avenue, NBC Chicago reported a recommendation for alternative routes, suggesting drivers "should bail out at Harlem and take Roosevelt West." The crash involved a box truck rolling onto its side as part of a three-vehicle incident.
State police reported that injuries occurred in the crash, and those affected were taken to local hospitals. The number of injured people, the severity of their injuries, and the cause of the crash remain unknown, as per FOX 32 Chicago. There is also no estimated timeline for when all lanes will reopen.
