In an act of kindness that went beyond the call of duty, a Murfreesboro police officer has been recognized for his compassionate response to an injured animal in need. Officer Samuel Lopez received the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award from VFW Post 4575 Smith–Rogers–Reeves at Stones River, a distinction shared on the Murfreesboro TN Police Department's Facebook page. The award ceremony took place at the Hero’s Den, celebrating Lopez's gentle approach to a distressed canine found amidst the dangers of traffic.

Back in September 2025, Lopez swiftly responded to a report of a loose dog near Northfield Boulevard and Sulphur Springs Road. Facing an animal too scared to come near, he offered his own lunch and water in an attempt to safely coax the dog. Eventually, his efforts led to Rutherford County Pet Adoption and Welfare Services (PAWS) taking the dog under their care. Officer Lopez re-told the incident, stating, "My wife and I had to put our dog down a few years ago when we first moved to Tennessee, so I have a heart for animals," as per the Murfreesboro TN Police Department.

The VFW's official recognition follows an outpouring of support from the community, where images and videos of the event had previously made rounds on social media. Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Lopez affirmed, "I am very honored to be chosen for this award and especially honored to receive it from VFW members who gave so much for our country," the Murfreesboro TN Police Department noted.
